Ocean Dreamer

The Wonder Dog is a smart one, that’s for sure. Check out her new trick. First, the setup: I am sitting on the couch with Cassie curled up beside me in what is clearly actually Zoe’s spot. Zoe’s old routine was to jump up on the couch and try to push Miss Cass out of the way – only that did nothing but piss Cassie off severely.

Like I said, though, Zoe is quite smart. She knows that Miss Cass will jump at the chance to go outside. Every time. She also knows that sitting by the door will convince me that she in fact needs to go out and pee herself. (The Wonder Dog’s other name is Velcro Dog. She rarely asks to be separated from me unless its absolutely necessary.)

Here’s what happens with her new trick: Cass and I sit on the couch and Zoe goes over to the door on the other side of the room, where she sits quietly and stares at me (also a signal that she wants to go out). I get up and go over to the door to let her out. Cass sees me head over to the door and leaps up so she can go outside. I open the door and Cass runs out. The Wonder Dog, however, runs away from the door. I shut the door, go back to the couch, and Wonder Dog happily curls up next to me. This was her plan all along.

What can I say? She’s a smart one.
